Looking Ahead to 2017

In 2016, we launched Intel® Storage Builders with 74 members and continued to build momentum through the year, ending with more than 120 members in our ecosystem. During our initial year, we also launched a new Intel Builders Innovation Fund Program, Intel Storage Builders University and Intel Builders Construction Zone. Our ecosystem produced 45 solutions briefs, 58 microsites, 45 blogs, 23 webinars with 2,550 subscribers, 14 podcasts with 52,045 listens and participated in six Intel Storage Builders Summits!

Storage is entering a new era with next generation technologies, new services based cloud architectures and requirements for ubiquitous secure data access. Storage transformation is an unprecedented opportunity for Enterprise and Cloud Service Providers to actually transform their business and meet the ever-increasing demand of secure, available data required of their storage infrastructures. Successful transformation happens at many different levels within the industry.

First, Enterprise Data Centers need to galvanize their resources and collaborate in order to accelerate the availability of "cloud-ready," tested, and aligned solutions into the marketplace. Intel Storage Builders plays a fundamental role in this solution development phase as a platform in which partners can drive technical innovation, more efficient solution architectures, performance characterization, proofs of concepts, and trials. In 2017, the industry can expect more opportunities to engage with the program at the technical enablement level.

Second, our ecosystem and end users alike need to continue ramping their practical and technical knowledge of software defined storage and cloud storage environments in order to expedite the modernization of storage. Last year, the Intel Storage Builders University was launched to benefit our community and end users. This year, our community will benefit even more from the university as we work to further increase the depth and breadth of our training curriculum.

And finally, in order for us to see actual traction within the industry, our ecosystem needs to have an accurate and comprehensive understanding of the pain points experienced by our end user community. The Intel Storage Builders program will facilitate, in 2017, channels of communication and collaboration between end users and our vast ecosystem of partners in order to simplify roadmaps of adoption.

We have accomplished a lot together in 2016; however, there is a lot of good work ahead of us. Intel Storage Builders is committed to working closely with our partners and customers, embracing initiatives that drive growth and innovation in the industry and together making 2017 the most successful year yet in accelerating next generation storage solutions.

Looking forward to another amazing year!

Intel® Intelligent Storage Acceleration Library V2.17

The Intel® Intelligent Storage Acceleration Library (ISA-L) team recently released ISA-L v2.17. Intel® ISA-L provides tools to maximize storage throughput, security, and resilience, as well as minimize disk space usage. The release focused on extending the performance of the highly-optimized DEFLATE algorithm known as igzip and the addition of CRC64 support. Additional features include new fast decompression and compression improvements such as fast custom Huffman code generation, and speed and compression ratio improvements.

Storage Performance Development Kit

The Storage Performance Development Kit (SPDK) provides a set of tools and libraries for writing high performance, scalable, user-mode storage applications. The newly released SPDK 16.12 provides several major additions, including the release of a userspace NVMe over Fabrics host driver, otherwise known as a NVME-oF initiator. The new release also includes NVMe hotplug, multi-process NVMe support, and a Cepth RBD blockdev module.
