Optimizing Scale-out Storage with Intel Optane Solid State Drives

By Administrator

As enterprises continue to deploy high-performance workloads on-premise and, in the cloud, the need for scalable storage technology and fast hardware increases exponentially. Intel Optane SSD is advancing object storage by providing a robust, fast, and highly scalable solution using Intel Optane storage media. When combined with software-defined storage systems like the OSNEXUS QuantaStor platform, enterprises can utilize complex open-source storage technologies such as Ceph to bring highly scalable and efficient object storage to their storage architecture.

Intel Optane SSDs for Fast Storage

Enterprises and cloud providers are rapidly adopting PCIe/NVMe-based SSDs that deliver robust, long-lasting scalable performance. Intel Optane storage media is a non-volatile storage option based on Intel Optane storage media technology that modernizes the existing data center architecture with a new tier in the memory and storage hierarchy, filling the gap between high-performing volatile memory and lower-performing, but affordable, NAND storage. Intel Optane SSD is unique in its combination of low latency, high quality of service, high endurance, and high throughput.

Delivering performance, quality of service, and capacity improvements to further optimize storage efficiency, Intel Optane SSD enables data centers to do more per server, minimize service disruptions, and more efficiently manage at scale than traditional NAND storage.

Ceph and Software-Defined Storage for Scalable Object Storage

Software-defined storage platforms provide hardware flexibility that enables organizations to rapidly adopt new storage technologies like Intel Optane technology. When Intel Optane technology is combined with QuantaStor Software-Defined Storage it becomes an integrated, monitored, and easy-to-manage component of an overall storage solution on standard commodity hardware.

Intel Optane SSDs complement QuantaStor based Ceph open source scale-out storage solutions by delivering on average a 250% boost in write performance versus using traditional SSD media. Storage clusters comprised mostly of HDD storage rely heavily on fast high-endurance flash media to boost write performance.

With Intel Optane technology, writes are completed faster than with standard NVMe media thereby reducing latency and boosting overall throughput for mission-critical applications.

Intel Optane SSDs enable QuantaStor Storage Grids to run scale-out clusters faster while simultaneously addressing cost issues generally associated with scale-out storage clusters.

OSNEXUS has certified the Intel Optane SSDs for use with QuantaStor to bring faster, more scalable object storage to enterprises who are looking to adopt open-source storage management.

The Future of Object Storage

Data is being created at an unprecedented rate, and enterprises are demanding high-performing storage systems that include software capable of consolidating workloads and hardware to lower latency and accelerate performance. Traditional proprietary storage software and outdated hardware such as NAND memory do not keep up with today’s storage demands in industries including healthcare, finance, education, and life sciences.

Intel Optane storage media is now being widely adopted by enterprises and cloud providers needing to modernize data center architecture to increase the performance of their systems. PCIe and NVMe-based SSDs deliver robust, long-lasting scalable performance as well as lower latency, making Intel Optane storage media highly desirable for complex object storage workloads and beyond.

Enterprises today are increasingly utilizing object storage technology due to its scalability, reliability, ease-of-management, and cost-effectiveness. At the same time, there is a trend to consolidate workloads onto one platform. “Many [enterprises] are looking to consolidate more workloads onto fewer platforms, moving away from the complexity of storage silos. SDS products that support block, file, and object storage in a single platform and provide the storage management functionality to optimize different pools of storage for performance, availability, massive capacity, or other business requirements offer the opportunity for broader workload consolidation,” says Eric Burgener, Research Vice President at IDC.

Software-Defined Storage systems often require large amounts of RAM which closely correlates with the amount of storage connected to the storage server. In systems with upwards of 1PB of storage per server the economics of the Intel Optane persistent memory, a DRAM form-factor device based on Intel Optane storage media, drastically reduces the system cost with little to no impact in the overall system and cluster performance.

QuantaStor features advanced storage management technology that provides highly scalable S3 object storage for a variety of workloads including archive, backup, and content delivery networks (CDN). Intel Optane persistent memory combined with Ceph technology and QuantaStor’s grid management technology enables organizations to deploy and manage object storage with much more ease than has previously been achievable.
