Today, SGI is excited to announce support for the new Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v4 product family across our SGI ICE X, SGI ICE XA, and Rackable platforms. The new Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v4 product family is built on Intel’s 14nm process technology, is socket compatible with the previous generation Intel Xeon processor E5 v3 family, and offers a seamless transition with more cores (up to 22 cores), more last-level cache (from 45 to 55MB) and higher memory bandwidth supporting higher DDR4 memory speeds and delivering more performance for our customers. With new and enhanced features Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v4 product family enables SGI to extend its performance leadership in production supercomputing.
SGI recently announced, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) selected SGI to build one of the world's most advanced computer systems to meet NCAR’s goals of developing models for predicting the impact of climate change and severe weather events on both global and local scales. SGI is pleased to announce this system, named “Cheyenne,” will utilize more than 7,000 of the new Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v4 product family delivering 5.34 petaflops of performance. The new Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v4 product family coupled with the SGI high density packaging and warm water cooled technology for lower power consumption, will enable Cheyenne to be three times more energy efficient (in floating point operations per second, or flops, per watt) than Yellowstone, its predecessor.
The SGI ICE architecture allows for “live” upgrades to running clusters. SGI will be supporting the addition of hundreds of new Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v4 product family-based nodes to NASA Ames’ SGI “Pleiades” supercomputer. Already one of the world’s largest Intel Xeon processor-based installations, the new additions will bring the total SGI node count to close to 12,000 (24,000 processors).
SGI ICE platforms already hold the record results for SPEC® MPIL2007 and SPEC MPIM2007 which are the most objective and representative benchmarks for evaluating MPI-parallel, floating point, and compute intensive performance across a wide range of cluster and SMP hardware. SGI is pleased to announce the new Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v4 product family has enabled SGI to set 11 new world record SPEC MPI results for SPEC MPIL and SPEC MPIM across varying system sizes from 2 to 32 sockets. The Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v4 product family is available for shipment beginning March 31, 2016 in:
- ICE X IP131 and IP133 blades
- ICE XA IP125CS and IP139CS blades
- Rackable C1104-GP1, C1110-GP2, C2108-GP5, C2112-GP2, and C2112-4GP3 platforms.
