Huiying Medical, the only medical-imaging AI company that has received investment capital from Intel to date, shared its successful experience in the healthcare industry at the 2019 Intel Capital Global Summit.
Effective commercialization of digital medical technology requires easy-to-implement, scalable systems that can achieve successful health outcomes, according to Dr. Xiangfei Chai, founder and CEO of Huiying Medical.
The company collaborated with Intel to optimize Huiying Medical algorithms that run on Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors. This approach enables users to quickly and efficiently upgrade existing hardware without adding GPUs, reducing costs and simplifying deployment.
During the summit, Dr. Chai discussed AI in the medical-imaging industry and the challenges facing the industry with Nasdaq Vice President Dylan James. “The biggest trend is that artificial intelligence will be integrated into the full healthcare continuum,” Dr. Chai said. Huiying Medical has a complete IT solution that includes radiology information system (RIS) / picture archiving and communication systems (PACS). The company has already introduced its technology to nearly 1,000 hospitals in China.
When asked what advice he would give companies and entrepreneurs who are, or who will be, involved in the medical AI industry, he recommended that companies look for partners who can make implementation easier and improve results. ”However, we all need to realize that the transition from technology to product often takes longer than expected, especially in the healthcare field,” he added.
How Digital Health Solutions Will Improve Care
In other conversations, Dr. Chai pointed out that there is a growing need for digital health solutions that improve the accessibility and affordability of medical resources which add value and improve healthcare outcomes. This challenge, which is especially acute in the case of emerging markets, directly impacts delivery models and private sector business models. The private sector has a key role to play in improving service efficiency and patient outcomes.
Dr. Chai pointed out that, because of its standard image format and relatively mature technologies, medical imaging is a great area for AI commercialization. Today, AI-assisted diagnosis applications help radiologists boost their efficiency without comprising quality, which exactly meets the need of developing countries.
“The key consideration when adopting a new technology is that it needs to be accessible and usable throughout the full healthcare continuum,” Dr. Chai said. I believe that AI will be one of the most important tools for us to meet the challenges of providing affordable, quality healthcare services throughout the world.”
